A stunning 11th century fortress turned into a Benedictine monastery, Muri-Gries is not your typical winery. The fairly large estate, located in Süd Tyrol, in northwestern Italy, is not just a winery, it’s also an orchard and a working farm.
Since 1947, the monastery has been producing DOC wines – to this day, the vineyards have been meticulously taken care of by the monks of the Order. Of the nearly 75 planted acres, a large portion of these vines feature Lagrein grapes, a local red variety that produces deep and complex wines.
Including Muri-Gries’ delightful Lagrein Rosato, which I’m spotlighting today.

The first thing you notice about the Muri-Gries Lagrein Rosato is its color. Candy-pink with a hint of orange highlights, the wine is playful and enticing.
On the nose, the bright cherry aroma makes an immediate impression. The wine is fruity, fresh, youthful. But at first sip, it’s the bright acidity that makes its mark. The gums tingle and the taste buds open to meet the delicious red cherry, strawberry, red apple skin and subtle herbal flavors that follow.
Despite its crispness, this rosé is round and pleasant in the mouth and has delicate mineral notes, too. All of which makes it a beautiful companion to this tomato frittata with fresh herbs.
The fruitiness of the wine is perfect with the tomatoes, while the herbal notes complement the fresh herbs in the frittata. And its mouthwatering acidity is at home with both the richness of the eggs and the slightly tart tomatoes.
The Muri-Gries Lagrein Rosato is an incredible value to boot – a wine that you can sip with abandon.
